RESUMO

Achyranthes aspera (Amaranthaceae) is a most important plant in the Indian medicinal system of Unani, Ayurveda, and Sidha. It is distributed throughout tropical countries particularly this medicinal herb is found as a weed all over India. The antibiotic-resistant bacteria treatment, many medicinal plants act as alternatives to antibiotics and are considered new resources for producing agents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant, antibacterial, cytotoxicity, and wound-healing potential of methanolic and aqueous extracts of A. aspera. Physio-chemical parameters of A. aspera were screened by qualitative and quantitative phytochemicals and it revealed the existence of saponins, alkaloids, glycosides, and flavonoids in each extract. The methanolic extract showed strong scavenging effects against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical in comparison with the aqueous extract. The methanolic extract of A. aspera was bactericidal at 100 µg/ml concentration against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus). In addition, the finding suggests A. aspera extract promotes in vitro wound healing by enhancement of Vero cells and has the potential for the treatment of wounds. The study concludes the strong radical scavenging effect of Achyranthes aspera along with remarkable antibacterial and wound healing actions.

RESUMO

An understanding in the field of periodontal medicine explains the fact that the oral cavity serves as a niche for numerous pathogenic microorganisms. When these microorganisms or their by-products disseminate to the various parts of the body, they are capable of triggering diseases characterized by an altered host immune-inflammatory response in the anatomically distinct organ. This mechanism is reported in the propagation of cardiovascular diseases with respect to periodontal medicine. Abundant amount of literature suggests an association between atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and periodontal diseases. However, there is very less data available to highlight the association between periodontal disease and non-atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, such as congenital anomalies of the heart. This review outlines the relationship between periodontal diseases and congenital heart diseases and also helps us understand whether the presence of periodontal disease can worsen the preexisting congenital cardiac disease.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to test the reliability and validity of the Tamil version of the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS). One hundred and forty-six patients attending the Outpatient Department of SRM Dental College, Chennai, India consented to participate in the study. The assessment tools consisted of a history form, Tamil version of the MDAS questionnaire and a form for Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The Tamil version of MDAS had a good internal consistency of 0.839. The mean total score decreased with age. Females were more anxious than males (10.16 and 9.43, respectively). Uneducated, unemployed and low income subjects were more anxious than their counterparts who were educated, employed and from a higher income group. Persons who perceived their oral health as poor were more anxious. Independent t-test showed a highly significant difference in the mean total score of the respondents who had postponed their dental visit due to anxiety (t-test 6.494, P < 0.001). VAS and MDAS scores showed a highly significant correlation (r = 0.827, P < 0.001). This supported the convergent validity of MDAS. The Tamil version of MDAS showed acceptable psychometric properties.
